Demonology and Witchcraft - "Less we forget"Martin Antoine Del Rio

Martin Antoine Del Rio was a famous Jesuit theologian and classical scholar regarded as an authority on “Witchcraft” during the great persecutions of the sixteenth century in Europe. He was born in Antwerp on the 17th May (Whit Sunday) 1551 to a Spanish merchant called Antonio del Río and his wife Eleonora López de Villanova. He studied classical literature and languages (including Hebrew, Chaldean and others) at numerous universities across Europe before receiving a master’s degree in law from Salamanca in Spain in 1574. At the age of 19, he published an edition of Seneca (Seneca the Younger, the Roman Stoic philosopher, statesman and dramatist), and by the age of 24 had become Vice-Chancellor and Attorney General for the Belgian province of Brabant in the Netherlands. After this period of political service in the Netherlands, in 1580 he entered the Jesuit order teaching at different Jesuit colleges across Europe, including Bordeaux, Douai, Graz, Mainz, Leuven, and Salamanca, while gathering material for his major work “Disquisitionum Magicarum Libri Sex” published in 1599. This encyclopaedic work discusses magic, alchemy, witchcraft, prophecy, and apparitions, and gave instructions for judges conducting the witchcraft trials. The work help to revive the intolerance of the earlier equally sinister Malleus Maleficarum (1486) and made him a staunch enemy of the Catholic priest Cornelius Loos who opposed the witch-hunts.

Del Rio was the author of a large number of books, including classical commentaries and works of biblical exegesis. He remains, however, best known for his six-volume Magical Investigations (1599–1600), a work on magic, superstition, and witchcraft. Without doubt Del Rio was a very educated man, but his influential works on witchcraft are a monument of credulity and intolerance. His intelligence was not tempered with love and kindness toward humanity. He died in 1608. Some

witchcrafts, that selleth nations through her whoredoms, and families through

ye to your prophets, nor to your diviners, nor to your dreamers, nor to your
enchanters, nor to your sorcerers, which speak unto you, saying, Ye shall not
serve the king of Babylon: for they prophesy a lie unto you, to remove you far
