Pagan Pioneers: Founders, Elders, Leaders and OthersAnn Moura
Written and complied by George Knowles
Born 20th August 1947 Ann
Moura is an American hereditary Witch and the author of a number of books about
magick, religion and Neo-Paganism. Her
most popular book is “Green Witchcraft:
Folk Magic, Fairy Lore & Herb Craft” (published by Llewellyn
Publications in 1996). Ann calls
her tradition “Green Witchcraft” and her public Craft name is Aoumiel (pronouced
as Awm’ee-el). Ann Moura
was raised in an oral Craft tradition of at least three generations.
With the passing of her mother in 1993, she decided to put her oral Witch
heritage into writing in order to preserve it and open it to others.
Her mother was Brazilian with a Celtic-Iberian background, while her
father was a naturalist of English and German heritage bringing a wide range of
outdoor experience into her life. Ann
has lived in many areas of the United States and travelled extensively teaching
and presenting her own tradition as “Green Witchcraft” at festivals,
gatherings and conferences throughout the U.S.A., Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Japan
and Europe.

As a young child, Ann once told a friend about
celebrating the Full Moon and leaving milk outside for the Fairies and was told
it was what Witches do? Later she
asked her mother: “Are we
Witches?” Her mother
responded in quiet tones saying: “We
never name ourselves; others name us, and those who need us will find us.”
She learned in that instant the importance of the tenet “To Know, To
Dare, To Will and To Be Silent”. In
college, without mentioning her heritage, students seeking occult training,
spells, and divinations sought her out. Growing up under the guidance of her mother and grandmother, through the age old oral Craft tradition, she was taught folk magic, spells and Craft concepts as part of her daily life, which included: Rules of Conduct, Spiritism and Spirit communication, reincarnation, divination, magical workings, the use of herbs, candles, oils and stones, and calling upon the Elements while working with “The Power.” According to Ann, her mother and grandmother were Craft wise Brazilians of Celtic-Iberian descent who through necessity practised within a general framework of Catholicism. In her own practice of the Craft, Ann moved away from the
Christianised associations her mother and grandmother had used and doesn't
include the names of Christian saints. Instead,
she uses the names of Pagan deities because she believes that the family’s
tradition was originally Pagan. Her
own prefered deities are Bendis and Shiva, and her Craft name is
“Aoumiel” (pronouced as Awm’ee-el), which she chose to reflect her
view of balance between male and female aspects of the Divine.
She also connects with other deities, and in the year 2000, while
attending a Native American naming ritual, she was surprised and delighted to
hear the voice of Spirit telling her not to be so serious and naming her “Dogstar”. In her mundane life while working her way through higher education, Ann has always worked at one thing or another, from being a department store clerk to data entry clerk, to secretary for a department store manager, and office manager in a shipping office, at the same time while studying for her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in History. Later she became a certified Archivist, served as a US Navy Lieutenant and worked as a high school history teacher. In her books Ann
recounts a number of anecdotes, which she writes
from the perspective of her personal experience and family training.
Her books are sold internationally in English, Italian, French, German,
Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, and Russian. Married for over 40 years with two grown up children,
Ann’s interests include a variety of arts and crafts.
She now lives in Florida where
she runs her own metaphysical store the “Luna Sol Esoterica”
located at 311 S. Park Avenue in Sanford, FL.
There she presents public Sabbat
rituals in open circles, usually as a festival that includes vendors,
healers, and readers. The store
also provides classrooms for instructors in a variety of esoteric fields, as
well as for readings and healings. While
she is so busy with the store, her travels to other author events and Pagan
Gatherings is now quite limited, but she continues to teach
Green Witchcraft and other Craft
subjects locally.
