Old Masters of Academia
If you have ever done research into ancient history then you will no doubt have seem references to some of the old time “Masters of Academia”, the writers, poets and artists whose knowledge, wisdom and foresight have inspired so many. Those whose works live on, collected on shelves in dusty old museums, where they continue to be referenced by historians and others. But have you ever wondered who these old Masters are? Here is my attempt to find out about some of them:
Written and compiled by George Knowles
bc) was a Greek mathematician, philosopher, physicist, engineer, inventor and astronomer who
wrote and passed down important works on geometry, arithmetic and mechanics.
Archimedes was born in Syracuse on the eastern coast of Sicily and educated in Alexandria in Egypt. He then returned to Syracuse, where he spent most of the rest of his life devoting his time to research and experimentation in many fields.
In mechanics he defined the principle of the lever and is credited with inventing the compound pulley and the hydraulic screw for raising water from a lower to higher level. He is most famous for discovering the law of hydrostatics, which is sometimes known as ‘the Archimedes principle’, in which discovered that a body immersed in fluid loses weight equal to the weight of the amount of fluid it displaces. Archimedes is supposed to have made this discovery when stepping into his bath, causing him to exclaim ‘Eureka!’
While few details of his personal life are known, he is regarded as being one of the leading scientists in classical antiquity and the greatest mathematician of ancient history, perhaps even the greatest of all time. He anticipated modern calculus and analysis by applying concepts of infinitesimals and the method of exhaustion to derive and rigorously prove a range of geometrical theorems, including: the area of a circle; the surface area and volume of a sphere; area of an ellipse; the area under a parabola; the volume of a segment of a paraboloid of revolution; the volume of a segment of a hyperboloid of revolution; and the area of a spiral.
His other mathematical achievements include deriving an accurate approximation of pi; defining and investigating the spiral that now bears his name; and creating a system using exponentiation for expressing very large numbers. He was also one of the first to apply mathematics to physical phenomena, founding hydrostatics and statics, and explaining the principles of the lever.
He also designed innovative machines, such as his screw pump,
compound pulleys, and defensive war machines to protect his native Syracuse,
such as the “catapult”, a “mirror system” for focusing the sun’s rays
on invading boats and igniting them, and the fearsome “Claw
of Archimedes” a weapon he is said to have designed in order to defend
the city of Syracuse from invasion. Also
known as “the ship shaker”", the claw consisted of a crane-like arm
from which a large metal grappling hook was suspended.
When the claw was dropped onto an attacking ship the arm would swing
upwards, lifting the ship out of the water and possibly wrecking it.
There have been modern experiments to test the feasibility of the claw,
and in 2005 a television documentary entitled Superweapons of the Ancient
World built a version of the claw and concluded that it was a workable
device. Sadly Archimedes died
during the Siege of Syracuse in 212 bc,
he was killed by a Roman soldier despite orders that he should not be harmed.
The tomb of Archimedes
Cicero (c.287–212 BC) later describes visiting the tomb of Archimedes, which was surmounted by a sphere and a cylinder, which he had requested be placed on his tomb to represent his mathematical discoveries.
