Demonology and Witchcraft - “Less we forget”

Johann Georg Fuchs von Dornheim

Written and compiled by George Knowles

Johann Georg Fuchs von Dornheim (1586–1633) was the Prince-Bishop of Bamberg from 1623 to 1633.  He was known as the “Hexenbrenner” (witch burner) or the “Hexenbischof” (witch-bishop) for presiding over the most intensive period of witch trials in early modern Bamberg.

Dornheim was born in Wiesentheid, Bavaria, Germany on the 23rd April 1586.  Educated through the Catholic Church in Würzburg and Bamberg, he rose to become a Dean in Bamberg Cathedral in 1619 before being elected Prince-Bishop of Bamberg on 13 February 1623.  Bamberg at the time was a small independent bishopric in Bavaria, known for its violent persecution of witches.  The area had been devastated for years by war and conflicts within the Holy Roman Empire, as well as suffering from a series of crop failures, famines and plagues.  Rather than blaming the politicians, the people of Bamberg looked for supernatural explanations, and accusations of witchcraft soon proliferated.

The first “witch-bishop,” Prince-Bishop Johann Gottfried von Aschhausen, sent some 300 witches to their deaths between 1609 and 1622.  However, in comparison, Dornheim was spectacularly cruel and efficient killing some 600 witches by burning them alive at the stake.  Many of those accused of witchcraft were executed within weeks of their arrest, while others simply fled Bamberg, leaving behind properties and assets seized by the State as a way to finance more witch trials.

Motivated by the Counter-Reformation, Dornheim presided over the Bamberg witch trials from 1626 to 1631, and as part of the trials ordered the construction of a “Drudenhaus,” (a witch-house or prison) in 1627, which featured a torture chamber operated by full-time torturers and executioners.  Here torture was routinely applied to anyone accused, and the victims subjected to thumbscrews and vices, ice-cold baths and scalding lime baths.  They were whipped, burned with sulphur, put in iron-spiked stocks and subjected to other forms torture while children as young as 6 months old were also tortured and killed.  Even after forced confessions the physical abuse continued and prisoners had their hands cut off as they were led to the stake.

He also created a Witch Commission as a specialized bureau dedicated to investigating witchcraft cases then oversaw the establishment of a network of informers.  Accusations were not made public and the accused were denied any legal rights.  These trials led to the execution of 300-600 individuals, one of the most notable of which was the Bamberg burgomaster Johannes Junius.

In the midst of the Thirty Years’ War, troops under Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden and John George I, Elector of Saxony occupied the Prince-Bishopric of Bamberg and on the 11th February 1632, forced Dornheim to flee the city.

He died in exile in Spital am Pyhrn, Austria on the 29th March 1633.
