Demonology and Witchcraft - "Less we forget"Balthasar Bekker

Balthasar Bekker (20th March 1634 – 11 June 1698) was a Dutch Cartesian minister and author of philosophical and theological works. He was a key figure in ending the witchcraft persecutions of early modern Europe. His best-known work is “De Betoverde Weereld” (1691), or “The World Bewitched” (1695). Bekker was born on the 20th March 1634 in Metslawier, a village in the province of Friesland in the Netherlands). He was the son of a German pastor from Bielefeld in Germany. He was educated at the University of Groningen under Jacob Alting, and later at the University Franeker in Netherlands. While there he witnessed the rising disputes between the Reformed Church and Cartesians. Bekker openly took sides and published one of the first theological defences of Cartesian philosophy. He argued that it posed no risk to the Reformed Church, because philosophy and theology had their own domains. His arguments however made him a few enemies in the churches higherachy. After finishing his education, Bekker was made the rector of a local Latin school, and later in 1657 appointed pastor of the small village of Easterlittens. There he became one of the first ministers to preach sermons on Sunday afternoon. After being driven out from Friesland in 1679 by the changing forces of the reformation, Bekker moved to Amsterdam where he was able to find a similar ministerial position and continue working. In 1683 he travelled to England and France, and within two months had visited London, Cambridge, Oxford, Paris and Leuven in Belgium. He was particular interested in studying the art of fortifications. Bekker was an enthusiastic disciple of René Descartes (the French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist.), and wrote several controversial works on philosophy and theology, which by their freedom of thought aroused considerable hostility among other academics. In his book “De Philosophia Cartesiana”, he argued that theology and philosophy each had their separate terrain and that Nature can no more be explained through Scripture than can theological truth be deduced from Nature.

Betoverde Weereld
His best-known work is “De Betoverde Weereld” (1691), or “The World Bewitched” (1695), in which he critically examined the phenomena generally ascribed to spiritual agency. He attacked the belief in sorcery and “possession” by the devil. Indeed, he questioned the devil’s very existence and argued that demonic activity and witchcraft could not occur in this world. He applied the doctrine of accommodation to account for the biblical passages traditionally cited on the issue. The book had a sensational effect and was one of the key works of the “Early Enlightenment” movements in Europe. The publication of the book led to Bekker's deposition from Church ministry. The orthodox among Dutch theologians saw his views as placing him among other notorious atheists such as: Thomas Hobbes, Adriaan Koerbagh, and Baruch Spinoza:
Thomas Hobbes, Adriaan Koerbagh, and Baruch Spinoza:Eric Walten (the Dutch Enlightenment thinker and pamphleteer) came to his defence and attacked his opponents in extreme terms. Bekker was tried for blasphemy, maligning the public Church and spreading atheistic ideas about Scripture. Some towns banned the book, but Amsterdam in Holland never did and continued his paying his salary without formally stripping him of his post. He died in Amsterdam on the 11th June 1698 and was posthumously elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in July 1698.
