Ted Andrews was an internationally recognized author, storyteller and mystic, a teacher of shamanic, animistic and esoteric lore, as well as herb healing, Magick and the Qabalah. During his time he authored some 40 books many of which have been translated into foreign languages. His best-known book is already a classic best seller: ‘Animal Speak: The Spiritual & Magical Powers of Creatures Great and Small (1993)’.
Ted was born on the 16th July 1952 in Dayton, Ohio, into a large family that included six siblings, all with given names beginning with the letter ‘T’. He spent most of his formative childhood in Beavercreek, east of Dayton, where for his early education he attended a private Catholic school, the Carroll High School, and graduated in 1970. During his youth he spent a lot of time walking through neighborhood woods with his grandfather who shared with him his love and knowledge about animals and nature. He also developed clairvoyancy skills and was able to see and discern auras that other people could not see.
As a regular visitor to his local public library, Ted soon gained an interest in occult subjects, metaphysics and mysticism, particularly Jewish mysticism and practical Kabbalah. This later led to his writing his first book published through Llewellyn Publications in 1987 as: “Simplified Magic: A Beginner’s Guide to the New Age Qabala”, later reprinted as “Simplified Qabala Magic.”
Using his earlier knowledge of nature, Ted began working as a trail guide and animal keeper at the Brukner Nature Center, north of Dayton in Troy, and there held state and federal permits to work with birds of prey and conduct wildlife rescue and rehabilitation programs. He regularly took his animals into local schools and throughout the years give freely of his own time and expenses to help young people discover the wonder of animals and nature. Later he would write a number of children’s books about animals and magic.

After finishing graduate school at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ted worked for ten years as a teacher and counselor in the public school system, most of which time he spent working with disadvantaged students in special needs programs, and for this he received both local and state recognition.
A consummate student of alternative healing methods, Ted became certified in basic hypnosis through the New Life Center of Hypnotherapy in West Virginia, and later acupressure through the Center for Chinese Medicine in California. He then completed two years of formal study in “Herbs for Healthful Living” at the Herbal Emporium of Dayton, Ohio. As a clairvoyant since childhood, he later became a certified spiritualist medium working with past-life analysis, aura interpretation, dreams, numerology and the Tarot.
Ted was also a gifted musician; he had been trained on the piano from an early age, and so naturally began developing holistic healing methods using sound, music and voice. In this he employed the use of the Celtic harp, Bamboo flutes, Shaman rattles, Tibetan bells, Tibetan singing bowls and Quartz crystal bowls to create individual healing therapies that induced higher states of consciousness. He also composed, performed and produced the music for ten audiocassette recordings, and was a long time student of sacred dance, ballet and kung fu.
Ted traveled widely and became a sought after speaker and teacher. Each year he presented sell-out seminars to thousands of people throughout the US and Canada, and was equally popular when visiting the United Kingdom, Europe and parts of Asia. He was often featured on US national and local television as well as radio networks, and in May 2002 was invited to speak to the United Nations Staff Recreation Council in New York City because of his writings and work with animals.
Called a true Renaissance man he had the ability to make the mystical available to everyone and in his writings focused on translating esoteric material to make it comprehensible and practical for all. For his efforts in this endeavour, he won more Visionary Awards than any other author.
Sadly following a battle with cancer Ted passed away at his home, a farm and animal refuge center in Jackson, Tennessee, on the 24th October 2009. He is survived by his beloved wife Kathy and has left a lasting legacy of animal knowledge and occult lore that will no doubt pass the trial of time and not be forgotten.
